November 10th, Free Talking

19:00 - 19:50 2 Students
20:00 - 20:50 2 Students
Today we talked at length about the difficulties of getting a visa to work or study in another country. We talked about how we had encouraged or pressured one student to travel after college before he starts his new job. This opened the way to present a variety of ways to introduce advice, some being more forceful than others.
You should...
You ought to...
You had better... (this one seems very forceful)
If I were you I would... (this one seems very diplomatic)
You could...
It may be better to...
Have you tried... ?
I showed the class my new social insurance card and we talked about the organ doner option on the back. We all agreed that if someone needed an organ transplant we would want them to have ours if we died, but some of us felt strange about our organs being donated for scientific research. We then shared our opinions about spirituality and the afterlife. It got really deep, but we ran out of time.
Thank you for coming, I will see you soon.

It was news to me!
I did not know that the church next to the codominium used to be a kindergarten.
When Otsu Festival was held, the people from the church sold pastries and I bought some. They were very enjoyable!

He went to Singapore on business recently. Did you have some time to go sightseeing?
It just takes only 30-40 minutes from Singapore to Johor Bahru by taxi or bus. Many people from Malaysia
choose to commute for work into Singapore.
I now remember that the name of the hotel where you can enjoy Singapore Sling is Ruffles Hotel.

That's imressive!
The way he learns English at home is that he laminates vocaburaly cards and put them on
the walls, fridge, and walls in the bathroom!

11.10 Travel, Pattern Practice, Presentation with Connor
Travel Class 2-3 PM 4 Students
We spoke about asking directions, and getting on a bus in England, and we also spoke about the typical London Double Decker, and the way that English people refer to money.
Pattern Practice 3-4 PM 4 Students
We spoke about plans, invitations, and typical British greetings (though there are many more! And I could likely talk a lot about American greetings too if it ever interests anyone.)
Keywords:
Centre vs Center
___-wise (eg, time-wise, clockwise, length-wise)
Pound, Penny, Pennies, Pence, P
Certainly
Absolutely
Can't complain
Presentation Class 4-5 PM 1 Student
The student picked both of the topics that I had set, and presented his thoughts on "The Scariest Moment in Your Life" -which was composed very well, and I was impressed by the choice of adding humour at the end of the presentation to make the topic light-hearted- and he also presented his thoughts on "What is Your Favourite Movie, and Why?" -this was a shorter presentation, but still had a good structure, and had some interesting insight on the medium of cinema.
If you wish to take this class, please know that you need only pick one topic from the choices.
Next week's topics will be:
What is the Happiest Moment of Your Life?
If You Had Three Wishes, What Would You Wish For?
and this week's topics of The Scariest Moment of Your Life, and What is Your Favourite Movie are open for any new-comers to pick also.
