Free Talking with John 2015-11-05

2015年11月05日

I am now teaching on Thursday evenings instead of Wednesdays! Same time, same place, just my day has changed.

Lesson 1 - 19:00-20:00 - 1 Student

We spoke about the student's university course and their plans for when they finish university. I asked if they still planned to go travelling and if the recent airplane crash in Egypt had put them off. We talked about not really being nervous of flying, and that neither of us has any problems with turbulence on airplanes. We discussed what we did on flights and if we found them boring. We then talked about the expensive seats on airplanes: first class and business class. I said that trains in England still have first class seating but that they are so expensive that no one buys first class train tickets. We then looked at Japanese trains, which seem to have "Green Cars" that are similar to first class seats. I asked the student what their preferred method of transport was: flying, driving or by train. They said driving and we finished the lesson talking about car trips we had made, speed limits and that nobody sticks to the speed limit in Japan.

Vocabulary:
Turbulence.
Narrow.

Lesson 2 - 20:00-21:00 - 1 Student.

We started off explaining why we say "nobody follows the speed limit" instead of "everybody doesn't follow the speed limit" before talking about double negatives. An example of a double negative is: "I don't know nothing". I said about a Greek myth in which the character tells a monster that his name is 'No-one' so that, when he attacks the monster, the monster calls out "No-one is attacking me". As the student was not familiar with Greek myths, and in England we regularly perform plays based on these myths, I asked if they performed many plays while they were at school. It seems that they do not and only do a few performances during school festivals. I asked if they found memorising their lines easy and we discussed what sort of learner we are: whether we learn by seeing something done, by listening to something, by reading something or by actually doing it. We then talked about things that we had memorised and could still remember from school. The student mentioned being interested in space while at school but that they had learned nothing about it at the time. I asked if they had wanted to be an astronaut but, even when young, they had preferred to play baseball. We finished the lesson discussing the sports we had had to do in school, the sports the student had wanted to play and how parents seem to hand down sports to their children.

Vocabulary:
Nobody does instead of everybody doesn't.
Fortnight.
Reaction times.

Thank you for coming tonight. I hope to see you again soon!. kao05
