みんなさん久しぶり!!!
11th November 2015
Otsu Free Talk
7pm-8pm: 6 students
8pm-9pm: 4 students
Long time no see to a lot of students! It was great to see new faces and also people I hardly get to see again.
Lesson One:
The lesson started with us discussing internet dating and the fear of being stuck on a dating with a sociopath or a psychopath. I quickly explained the Fight, flight and freeze response to fear and how most psychopaths are believed to not have an amygdala which processes fear responses in humans. One of the students then brought up the topic of love hotels in Japan and an area near Otsu that is known to be the 'Red light district' of Shiga. The students mentioned that the area has changed its name over the years due to the negativity associated with the area. I then brought up the topic of Geishas as military officers from America during World War 2 had the belief that they were sex workers. Students explained the important role of Geishas and how they are seen to be artists in Japan. We spoke about the price of having dinner with a geisha and discussed what it entails. We then spoke about the most expensive events and concerts we have attended in the past. Two students had spent up to ¥20000 for ballet and music concerts. I mentioned that in Australia ticket prices for festivals usually cost around $150-300 and sell out within a few minutes.
Lesson Two:
I mentioned that I am approaching 'danger age' for single females and how people are expecting me to have a partner and get married. Students spoke about different ways people meet their partners and get married. We spoke about arranged marriages, business marriages, and normal marriages. Most students said that the average age for women and men to get married is increasing so I don't need to worry about my future....until I'm about 35. We then spoke about kids mobile phones as a teenager had showed it to me. I mentioned that it is like a grenade that you have to quickly pull the tab and throw. I then told the students about a recent case in Australia where a boy was seen screaming and holding on to a fence whilst a man was trying to abduct him. We spoke about the safety of children in Japan. Somehow we got onto the topic of work parties, work benefits and annual leave (paid leave). We asked a student about his restaurant and then spoke about Dim Sum as I am planning to make some next week if I can find the ingredients. We spoke about spicy food and touched on 'Types of tourists we are scared to be around'.
Thank you so much for the fun and relaxed lesson. It was great to see you all again! Hope to see you next week!
