今日は好みを表す比較表現 "prefer ~ to..."と"would rather ~than" を取り上げました。
【prefer ~ to...】
「・・・より~を好む」一般的な好みについて述べる場合に使用
I prefer tea to coffee.
(用法) 比較対象が名詞・動名詞の場合→prefer A to B
I prefer basketball to tennis.
I prefer walking to driving.
(用法) 比較対象が動詞の場合 prefer + to 動詞原形 + rather than + 動詞原形
Melissa prefers to stay home rather than go out.
【I'd(=I would) rather + 動詞原形】
「むしろ~をしたい」 特定の状況での好み、選択
I don't want to stay home. I'd rather go out.
★thanをつづけることで・・・をするよりはむしろ~をしたい」という意味になる
I'd rather walk than drive.
★否定形は”rather”の後に”not”を続ける
A:Do you want to go out?
B:I'd rather not go. (どちらかというと行きたくはありません)
★would rather の後に「主語+過去形」の文章(仮定法の文)を続けると「むしろ~だといいのに」と間接的で控えめな表現に。
I'd rather you told her about it. 否定形→I'd rather you didn't tell her about it.
残りの時間はabbreviation(省略形)の4つのタイプについて簡単に紹介させていただきました。
